The new version now includes a completely redesigned Query Module. The new module it a bit more complicated to use, but it is *significantly* more powerful and flexible and can create a far wider range of queries and reports. As much as possible, it has also been designed to make it easy to add new capabilities. Once you get NeoData 4.0 installed, I encourage you to start using the Query Module (you will want to read the Queries & Reports section of the Help document carefully) and to let me know what you think. I look forward to working with you to continue to develop this tool so it can address your needs as fully as possible. Note that the updated install files (Nd4Update.exe and Nd4Ugrade.exe) for Version 4.0 will place a file in your NeoData directory (SampleQueries.txt) from which you can import several sample queries into the Query Module to help you get started. Also, be aware that the new Query Module does *not* make use of any queries you may have defined in Version 3.1; the two approaches are so different that it was impractical to try to convert the old queries.

A reminder: Version 4.0 is designed to function alongside Version 3.1; we are recommending that you keep Version 3.1 in place for the time being both so that Version 3.1 can be used in case you run into any problems with the new version and need to switch back to the old version temporarily. Version 4.0 does make some changes to the database, but these will not affect the ability of Version 3.1 to use the same database. Two installation files are posted on the web site in the Program Updates section. ND4UPGRADE.EXE should be used for the initial installation of the new version alongside the old version.

ND4UPDATE.EXE should be used for updating the new version thereafter. Both installation programs require a password. Also on the web site you will find detailed instructions for upgrading (ND4UPGRADE.DOC) and a description of the major changes in Version 4.0 (ND4UPDATE.DOC). Please download and read both of these documents *carefully*. Note that you must upgrade Version 3.1 to 3.1.8a (if you haven't already) before you can upgrade to 4.0. NeoData 4.0 takes a slightly different approach to the spell checking process than did Version 3.1.

In addition to the Main Dictionary (which contains the bulk of the words and which cannot be altered) and the Custom Dictionary (to which new words can be added by users when they find valid words that aren't recognized by the spell checker), there is now a Secondary Dictionary (stored in a file named NEODATA1.DCT in your Neodata Program File Directory). This dictionary includes mostly medical terms not present in the Main Dictionary along with a handful of *abbreviations*. Since JCAHO is now requiring each hospital to compile and enforce a list of approved abbreviations, we have put the Secondary Dictionary words into a separate file so you can review and edit it if you wish.

While Version 4.0 is completely redesigned under the hood and includes many new features (particularly configuration features), there are a number of things that users have requested that are *not* in the initial release of the new version. Our goal for this initial release of 4.0 is to replicate the existing features of NeoData while adding some important new capabilities and to get the new version in general use while still keeping the transition relatively smooth for existing users. Now that 4.0 is officially out, we will move on to the fun part: adding new stuff. We expect the new version to make it easier and quicker to add new features, and we look forward to working with you in doing so.

====================================================== Vermont Oxford & eNICQ As a reminder, I'm including the previously posted instructions for converting to eNICQ (see below). As mentioned, we do not plan to support full data entry and submission for the Vermont Oxford Network database beyond the end of 2004 *except* for the enrollment and data extraction functions currently performed by the NeoData Vermont Oxford Module. As always, you will be able to use NeoData to find candidates for VON enrollment and to extract many of the VON data items from the NeoData inpatient data, but the remainder of the VON operations will be performed using eNICQ. Both NeoData Version 3.1.8a and Version 4.0 allow you to move your Vermont Oxford patient information from the NeoData database to the eNICQ database. We recommend that you get eNICQ installed and your data transferred well before the end of the year.
