Roland Michell is an American scholar trying to make it in the difficult world of British Academia. He has yet to break out from under his mentor's shadow until he finds a pair of love letters that once belonged to one of his idols, a famous Victorian poet. Michell, after some sleuthing, narrows down the suspects to a woman not his wife, another well known Victorian poet. Roland enlists the aid of a Dr. Maud Bailey, an expert on the life of the woman in question. Together they piece together the story of a forbidden love affair, and discover one of their own.

They also find themselves in a battle to hold on to their discovery before it falls into the hands of their rival, Fergus Wolfe. I've had a copy of this movie lying around for a couple of months and have never really gotten around to it primarily due to my love-hate feelings of Gwyneth Paltrow's movie choices.

I was sure this would be another one of those cases where no more than 15 minutes into the movie I'd be way too put-off by her performance to want to finish it. However, I was sorely mistaken. 'Possession' turned out to be a pleasantly charming surprise and I would recommend it to anyone who likes small, romantic films that are both witty and filled with lovey-dovey will-they or wont-they stuff. Paltrow and Eckhart are great and though the plot is pretty predictable, it never keeps you from really enjoying this picture. Neil LaBute has made a small gem.

English majors especially will enjoy this pic. Coming from a harsh Gwyneth critic, this recommendation is well earned.

De departe cel mai bun film al lui Spielberg si printre cele mai bune ale tuturor timpurilor. 'Schindler's List' atinge perfectiunea prin cinematografia superba, acting-ul impecabil, scenele pline de emotie si sentimente si prin soundtrack-ul creat cu pasiune si traire. O poveste din care si astazi se pot trage invataturi atunci cand vine vorba de egoismul sau ignoranta multora dintre noi. Un erou in adevaratul sens al cuvantului, Oskar Schindler a oferit darul cel mai de pret intr-o perioada in care acest cuvant nu mai valorifica nimic: a oferit VIATA! Malena este o capodopera ce transmite sentimente profunde cum rar o face un film. Cu toate ca in plan secund avem o oda a frumusetii, o evolutie a tanarului Renato si o perioada intunecata a Italiei sub conducerea lui Mussolini, in plan principal asistam la drama unei femei frumoase 'omorata' de societatea in care traieste datorita acestei calitati, obligata sa faca compromisuri pentru a supravietui si nevoita sa suporte o mare umilinta. O societate care este plauzibila oricand si oriunde.

Invidia, barfa, preconceptiile, efectul de turma si nu in ultimul rand instinctele animalice ale barbatilor, sunt elemente ce reflecta partea urata a naturii umane si pe care le intalnim zi de zi. 'In Orasul Domnului, daca fugi, esti mort dar si daca ramai tot aceeasi soarta o ai. Se intampla asa de cand ma stiu, de cand eram doar un copil.' Toti ne gandim la Rio de Janeiro ca un oras minunat, cu decoruri superbe, plaja, fotbal, samba, carnaval si peste toate statuia lui Isus Salvatorul (motivul pentru care este numit 'Cidade de Deus') dar putini stiu ca in contrast cu toate astea exista multe zone sarace cunoscute sub numele de favelas (ghetouri) unde problemele legate de droguri, crime si atacuri de banda sunt la ordinea zilei. Filmul exact asta incearca sa ne prezinte: partea urata a orasului, actiunea fiind plasata in anii '60, fiind o adaptare excelenta dupa romanul lui Paulo Lins. O poveste captivanta, realista, plina de violenta de multe ori dusa la extrem si niste actori care desi sunt amatori ai putea jura ca au mare experienta pe platourile de filmare.
