아무리 그런다고 내가 포기하겠나. 나는 새로운 방법을 찾았다.

동생들을 다 모아놓고 연설을 했다. '너희들은 오늘부터 다 학교에서 자퇴해라. 너희들의 월사금은 다 내가 쓰겠다. 너희들 중 한 놈도 밤새워 공부하는 것을 보지 못했다. 우수한 놈도 없고, 학문에 대한 열정이 넘치는 놈도 없다. 미래에 대한 야망도 없는 너희들은 어정쩡한 놈들이다. 그러니 너희가 돈을 쓰는 것은 국가와 민족의 낭비다.

너희들이 목숨을 부지하기 위해서는 교통표지판과 날아오는 고지서만 읽을 줄 알면 충분하다. 너희들은 이미 한글을 깨쳤으니 그만 공부해라. 그렇지만 나는 너무나 우수하다. 지금 공부를 중단한다는 것은 민족 자원의 훼손이다. 내 민족의 장래에 먹구름이 끼는 것이다. 그러니 너희들이 더 이상 돈을 안 쓰는 것은 애국 애족하는 길이다.' 동생들은 입을 쩍 벌리고 멍하니 나를 쳐다봤다.

그 광경을 부모님이 보고 말았다. 아버지는 아무 말도 않고 내게 등록금을 줬다. 그날 남편은 부모님으로부터 그 이야기를 들었던 것이다. 나는 그때까지도 부모님이 그렇게 선선히 등록금을 준 이유를 모르고 있었다. 내가 동생들에게 한 일장 연설을 들었으리라고는 상상도 못 했다. 부모님은 남편에게 '재는 무서운 년이니까 너도 조심해라'라고 말했다고 한다. 부모님은 남편이 나처럼 무서운 년과 10년이 넘도록 살고 있다는 사실만으로도 존경과 연민을 표했다.

백수였음에도 남편은 평생 내 부모님으로부터 무한한 동정과 연민을 받았다. 오로지 나와 살아준다는 그 사실 하나만으로.

김점선 이화여대에서 공부하였으며 1972년 홍익대 대학원에 입학하여 서양화를 전공했다. 그해 여름 우리나라에서 처음 열린 앙데팡당 전에서 제8회 파리비엔날레 출품 후보로 선정되어 화단에 데뷔했다. 1983년 이후 20여 년 동안 한 해도 거르지 않고 50여 차례 개인전을 열었다. 1987~1988년 2년 연속 평론가협회가 선정한 미술 부문 올해의 최우수 예술가에 선정되었다. 산문집에[나, 김점선] [10cm 예술 1. 2] [나는 성인용이야] 등이 있으며, 박완서, 황석영, 최인호, 정민 등의 책에 그의 그림을 싣기도 했으며, 최근 신간으로 [바보들은 이렇게 묻는다]이 있다.

@.매혹은 전부다 예술가가 갖추어야 할 조건의 전부다. 스티븐슨, 보르헤스가 말하고 수많은 관찰자들이 말하고 엿 같은 세상을 안 엿 같게 만드는 게 예술가다 라고 말하면 나를 돌로 치겠지. 어차피 죽을 거 돌로 맞아 죽을 만큼 질투와 증오를 받으면서 죽는 것도 염병 걸려 홀로 죽어가는 것보다야 좋다. 집을 지을 때 구조와 재료에 골몰하여 튼튼하고 편리한 집을 지었다면 그 집은 백 년도 못돼서 헐리게 마련이다. 그런데 그 집이 아주 매혹적으로 지어졌다면 수백 년이 지나도 허물어지지 않는다.

사람들이 있는 힘을 다해서 그 집을 보존하려고 난리를 피우고, 그리하여 대대손손 보호되어 감상된다. 그렇게 매혹은 힘인 것이다 김점선.'

'In 1994, before moving to Idaho, I lived with Ryan at 607 E. In Raleigh NC. I met Ryan in 1993 at the Fallout Shelter.

Soon he was playing drums (temporarily) in my band Spawn. PDS was still active.

Soon Spawn and PDS both broke up. Ryan and I goofed around with a 4 track, recording many songs under the band name 'Space Madness.' This was with Thompson King on bass.

We played one show as Space Madness, an outdoor concert in the parking lot behind Sadlack's Deli. Ryan and I would switch back and forth between vox/gtr and drums.

I think it was around March 1994 that Thompson moved to Colorado, so Ryan and I started jamming with our friend Caspar Lee on drums.. Ryan called it 'the skylarks' 'cuz that's the car that his girlfriend drove. Don't ask me about her, I just want to set the record straight about the bands and songs. Skylarks played a couple of shows, including one at the Brewery. In between all this Ryan recorded a few solo songs on my 4 track. I still have all the masters from this era.

They have not been officially released but it's been an idea for years here at Fort Hazel. These sessions produced the double sided 7inch that was released on bloodshot and sold at the 1997 WT shows. Its just that this tape represents the working mixes of the songs just as they came off the mixing board.

No mastering has been done except that I put a standard EQ on the copy I have when I took it to cd. Being a rough mix, the levels on certain songs are different than others, and you can hear starts and stops between, where songs were put down to tape, and there's some analog hiss.but all in all its a marvelous find! Much closer in feel to Faithless St. Than the Strangers record ended up being.some nuances in arrangement from the final record as well.

Notice 'Turn Around' especially.it may be my fave. It is imperfect, but gives us something to look forward to when an 'official' version of these sessions see the light of day (if they ever do) Ryan- acoustic and electric guitars Phil- electric guitars Caitlin- fiddle S.
